Topic: Where is the Virtual Office?

Special Guest: Simon Hayward, Research Director, GartnerGroup UK

Simon Hayward is a Research Director based in GartnerGroup's Egham, Surrey, UK office. He is in Australia to give presentations on the Electronic Workplace for GartnerGroup's clients. Simon will be returning to the UK after this IRC.

Mr. Hayward has more than 15 years experience in IT. Starting as a systems analyst, and then researching advanced computing topics, more recently he has had responsibility in both technical and marketing positions for development of software products. Before joining GartnerGroup, he was CTO of TeamWARE Group, a unit of Fujitsu developing groupware, workflow and related products for collaborative office working. Within GartnerGroup, his research interests include Internet technologies and systems supporting the electronic workplace, in particular groupware for real-time collaboration, messaging and workflow. Mr. Hayward is a graduate of Oxford University and a member of the British Computer Society.

At GartnerGroup's Electronic Workplace event he has given two presentations:

Virtualising the Office
- What trends will have the greatest impact in driving the transformation of the office towards an electronic workplace?
- How will office systems, groupware and intranet technologies, products and architectures evolve during the next five years to deliver on the promise of the electronic workplace?

- What major user risks will emerge as the leading vendors rapidly change course in their seeming death struggle for groupware segment ownership?
- How will the race to converge Internet standards and workgroup systems technology destabilise users’ investment plans?
- What are each of the leading vendors’ failings and how will their strengths help and hinder their drive for market leadership?
