Internet Reality Check
5:30 pm Friday, August 18, 2000
Kurrajong Hotel Bar, Canberra
Topic: The Web from Yokohama to Frankston
Special Guest: Mr Tony Hill, Executive Director of the Internet Society of Australia
Mr Tony Hill, Executive Director of the Internet Society of Australia and a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Computer Science at the Australian National University, recently returned from an important ICANN Yokohama meeting:
After three days immersed in the processes of ICANN, I thought you might like to know that I am still alive. Currently, I am sitting observing the ICANN board meeting in Yokohama...
Currently the board has considered the introduction of new Top Level Domains and, as I understand, after a six year process, has decided to allow introduction of new TLDs. The timetable involves a process that will take from now to the end of 2000. There was unanimous support for this resolution on the ICANN Board. This is a historic move that is likely to result in around 6 to 10 new top level domains. However, there continued to be concerns that stability was maintained both in terms of technical, practical and intellectual property considerations.
On returning to Australia, Tony attended an Internet event at Frankston, outside Melbourne. Join Tony and members of the Internet community to discuss the issues of global management of the Internet.
- IRCs are free (but you have to buy your own drinks and one
for the special guest) and open to anyone interested: just turn up.
Internet Reality Check (not to be confused
with Internet Relay Chat) is designed so that members of the 'net
community can meet and exchange the small amount of very important
information which is not suitable for digital transmission. ;-)
