Election'96 Internet Coverage - Report 1

Federal Elections 1996 - Computer Society in Live Internet Coverage from the Tally Room

Date: Saturday, 2 March 1996 18:50 +11:00 (EST)

It is starting to get busy in the Tally Room. I am sitting th the last of 12 rows of desks for the media. About 200 people are milling around, testing TV, radio links and phones. ABC Multimedia are set up, 2XX are waiting for the "talent" to arrive. About one third of the seats for the public are full.

At the moment there isn't much to report, the polling booths closed at 6pm local time. Some politicians are just starting to arrive.

Our digital photographers are just on their way from the car park, so we should have the first pictures in a few minutes.

There is a definite "pecking order" in the tally room. The TV media occupy booths overlooking the print and radio journalists on the floor. The Radio people appear to be at the front (I am way down the back).

Andrew Long and Henk Brusse from the National Library of Australia has just arrived with a Kodak digital camera.

The first few numbers are going up on the board but its a bit early to say anything about results. But check the ABC and see what they are saying.
